Show Your Affection By Giving Him A Unique Gift

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Alison Palmer You cant believe your luck. After dating what seemed to be an endless line of losers, you have finally found your own Mr. Right. He is special to you in so many ways and for so many reasons, and for that you want to show your affection by giving him a unique gift. Theres only one problem: you dont have the slightest clue where to begin looking. Well, dont worry, because in this article well give you some sure-fire ideas to present your man with the perfect gift that is sure to leave the right impression. The most important thing to keep in mind when looking for a gift for your guy is his interests. By now, you should have a pretty good idea about the things he is passionate about. Is he a huge sports fan? Does he love cars? Is he crazy about music or movies? By identifying the true loves of his love (aside from you of course), you will have a better starting point for choosing a truly unique gift. Now that you have made a mental checklist of the things he is interested in, you want to go beyond the standard gift. If he likes a certain sports team, a T-shirt or sweatshirt bearing the team logo would make a fine gift. But will it provide the effect you are shooting for? Probably not. Instead, why not take it a step further by getting him tickets to see his team play, or getting him a baseball autographed by one of his favorite players? By going the extra mile, you will elicit the desired reaction from your guy. While money can certainly purchase unique gifts that are great, what if you dont have the financial resources to buy something for your guy? This is definitely not a problem. In fact, gifts that are thoughtful and come from the heart are likely to have just as good an effect (if not better). For example, say you and your guy like the same type of music. You can burn him a CD compilation of all the songs that have special meaning in your relationship, or from bands that you both enjoy. This gift is perfect because it is unique to your relationship alone, and each time he listens to it he will think of the memories the two of you have made. Another perfect idea is to make him a scrapbook celebrating your relationship together. Include photos and other special pieces that will show him just how much he means to you. He will certainly appreciate the thought and effort you put into such a gift, and it is sure to hit just the right note. These ideas should give you a good starting point when considering a unique gift for your guy. It is important not to put too much pressure on yourself when selecting a gift, because he will most likely love anything given to him by you. Just remember that you can never go wrong giving him something that comes from the heart while keeping his interests in mind. Good luck! Cholesterol- Getting Down to the Basics

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Don_Ford,_M.D.] Don Ford, M.D. Blood cholesterol levels have been proven to be a major, modifiable risk factor for the development of heart disease. A risk factor is a condition that increases your chance of getting a disease. The fact that high cholesterol is a modifiable risk factor is important. Unlike your gender or your age, the cholesterol level in your blood is something you have the ability to change. High cholesterol levels can be treated with lifestyle modifications, supplements and/or prescription medication. Treatment to change blood cholesterol levels have been shown to lower your risk of getting heart disease or having a heart attack or stroke. Cholesterol builds up in the walls of your arteries. Over time, this buildup causes “hardening of the arteries” so that arteries become narrowed and blood flow to the heart is slowed down or blocked. You can imagine what that looks like if you think about the pipes under your kitchen sink. As they get clogged with food, grease and hair over time, the drainage of water slows and eventually stops completely. Since blood travels through these arteries, or pipes, to carry oxygen to your muscles, organs and tissues including your heart, a blockage could reduce enough blood and oxygen to your heart that you may suffer chest pain, called angina. If the blood supply to a portion of the heart is completely cut off by a blockage, the result is a heart attack. If this blockage occurs in your brain, the result is a stroke. High blood cholesterol itself does not cause symptoms; so there are a lot of people that are completely unaware that their cholesterol level is too high. It is important to find out what your cholesterol numbers are because lowering cholesterol levels that are too high lessens the risk for developing heart disease and reduces the chance of a heart attack or stroke. Even if you have already had a heart attack or stroke, lower cholesterol will reduce your chance of having second one. Cholesterol lowering is important for everyone–younger, middle age, and older adults; women and men; and people with or without heart disease. There are different kinds of cholesterol in your blood that can measured through a simple blood test preformed at your doctors office. This blood test must be preformed fasting, which means you can not eat or drink anything but water or black coffee for 8-12 hours before your blood test for them to be accurate. What is LDL? LDL (bad) cholesterol is the main source of buildup and blockage in the arteries. The majority of LDL is created by your body in your liver. A smaller percentage of it is absorbed through your diet. An easy way for patients to remember LDL is the bad cholesterol is to think the L in LDL stands for Lousy cholesterol, or the one you want to Lower. With this form of cholesterol, studies have shown the lower the better. Babies are born with an LDL of 30-40, so it is hard to lower the LDL too much. Since physicians and various guidelines have different goals for different patients, ask your doctor what your personal goal is for LDL. What is HDL? HDL (good) cholesterol helps keep bad cholesterol from building up in the arteries. An easy way for patients to remember this is the good cholesterol is the H in HDL stands for Healthy cholesterol or the one you want to be Higher. Studies show that with this form of cholesterol, the higher the better. If your HDL is below 40, it becomes an additional risk factor for heart disease. If your HDL is above 60, it actually allows you to subtract one of your other risk factors. What Is Triglicerides? Triglycerides are another form of fat in your blood which is often high in patients with diabetes, but can be high in anyone. Some patients may only have high triglycerides while all other cholesterol values remain normal. If you have both high triglycerides and high cholesterol, the condition is called mixed dyslipidemia. What Does Total Cholesterol To HDL Ratio Mean? Another number that clinical studies have shown to be important in determining your risk of heart disease is the ratio of Total Cholesterol to HDL Cholesterol. In general, it should be less than 4.0. Ask your doctor what your value is, and what your specific goal should be. Again this is a number where the lower it is, the better. The level of your LDL or bad cholesterol along with the number of other risk factors that you may have for developing heart disease will help your doctor decide not only your individual cholesterol goals, but if necessary what your individual treatment will include.Other risk factors for heart disease include age, gender (males), cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, HDL levels below 40, and a family history of early heart disease. Even though physical activity (sedentary lifestyle) and obesity are not included on this list, these are conditions that need to be corrected as well. There are several treatment options for patients depending on individual test results and goals. All treatments should include a diet designed to lower cholesterol intake and an exercise plan. Many treatment plans will include dietary supplements and/or prescription medication(s). There are a variety of prescription medications that can target your specific treatment needs, including but not limited to lowering the amount of LDL created by the liver, lowering the amount of LDL that is absorbed from your intestines, increasing levels of HDL or lowering levels of triglycerides.Your doctor may put you on one, or a variety of medications to meet your individual treatment goals. Blood cholesterol levels have been proven to be a major, modifiable risk factor for the development of heart disease. A risk factor is a condition that increases your chance of getting a disease. A modifiable risk factor is something you have the ability to change. High cholesterol levels can be treated with lifestyle modifications, supplement and/or prescription medication. Treatment to change blood cholesterol levels have been shown to lower your risk of getting heart disease or having a heart attack or stroke. There are many different types of cholesterol lowering medications that your doctor may prescribe, however these prescriptions can cause certain nutritional deficiencies that may increase your risk for side effects or diminish the risk reduction you would otherwise get from the cholesterol lowering medications. NutraMD Cholesterol Essential Nutrients supplement was designed to work with your cholesterol lowering medications by replacing lost nutrients reducing the risk of dangerous side effects, and promote better health. Medications for treatment of High Cholesterol: The three main classes include statins, fibrates, and bile acid sequestrants. Statins include the following medications: Lipitor (atorvastatin) Zocor (simvastatin) Pravachol (pravastatin). Mevacor (lovastatin) Crestor (rosuvastatin) Advicor (lovastatin + niacin). Caduet (atorvastatin + amlodipine). The main function of statins is to reduce an individuals risk for cardiovascular disease (i.e., heart attack, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, and plaque development in arteries) by reducing the total and LDL cholesterol levels as well as by reducing certain plaque promoting factors and increasing artery dilating factors.Your doctor may prescribe a statin if you have high cholesterol or have had heart attack or stroke in the past. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure or diabetes but do not have high cholesterol, your doctor may still prescribe a statin to reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease. Statins help lower cholesterol by blocking it’s direct synthesis throughout the body but primarily in the liver, however the action of the medication also blocks the synthesis of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and has a potential negative effect on the synthesis of vitamin D. * CoQ10 deficiency has been linked to the following diseases and symptoms: Congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, rhabdomyolysis (muscle break down), muscle and joint pain, and fatigue. Therefore to achieve maximum benefit from the statin medication and minimize potential side effects of nutrient deficiencies, you should compliment your prescription medication by taking NutraMD Cholesterol Essential Nutrients supplement. By doing this you will balance the risk/benefit ratio further in your favor. Fibrates include the following medications: Tricor, Antara, and Lofibra (fenofibrates) Lopid (gemfibrozil). The main functions of fibrates are to lower triglycerides and raise HDL (good cholesterol). These medicines also have a mild lowering effect on LDL (bad cholesterol) and total cholesterol. Your doctor may prescribe fibrates in combination with a statin or bile acid sequestrants. The down side of fibrates is there ability to increase muscle pain and myalgia (including rhabdomyolysis).11-15 These medications also have the ability to raise homocysteine levels.11-15 Homocysteine is a chemical (amino acid metabolite) which when elevated is a risk factor for heart disease, atherosclerosis, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and osteoporosis. The only substances known to lower homocysteine levels are the B-vitamins (folate, riboflavin, cobalamin, and pyridoxine). Therefore to reduce the potential risks while taking fibrates, you should also be taking NutraMD Cholesterol Essential Nutrients supplement. Bile Acid Sequestrants include the following medications: Questran or Questran Light (cholestyramine) Welchol (colesevelam HCl). The main functions of bile acid sequestrants are to lower cholesterol by binding to it in the intestine and preventing its absorption thus allowing its excretion in the feces. Your doctor may prescribe this type of medicine in combination with fibrates and statins. Unfortunately, bile acid sequestrants will also bind to vitamins A, D, E, and K as well as essential fats in the intestine preventing their absorption into the blood stream thus leading to their deficiencies. A few of the problems which arise from deficiencies of vitamins A, D, E, K, and essential fatty acids include the following: Heart disease, high cholesterol, stroke, high triglycerides, cancer, thyroid disease, autoimmune disease, bone disease, arthritis, joint pain, muscle pain, cataracts, skin lesions, allergies, and many other. Therefore, to reduce potential side effects of nutrient deficiencies you should take NutraMD Cholesterol Essential Nutrients supplement as long as you are on bile acid sequestrants. In summary, cholesterol-lowering medications prescribed by your doctor are necessary to treat your condition; however, you should also be aware that the long term potential nutritional side effects can be just as big a risk factor for your condition as well as other conditions. Put the odds in your favor and maintain your health with NutraMD Cholesterol Essential Nutrients supplement. [http://www.essential-nutrients.net/] http://www.essential-nutrients.net/ C. Discover the Secrets of Using An Abdominal Exercise Machine for Sexy, Scuplted Abs

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Gregg Gillies When it comes to fitness and exercise equipment, there are a lot of different options to choose from. This is especially true when talking about an abdominal exercise machine. After all, the abs are the one thing everyone wants to improve upon. For guys, it’s the six-pack, and for women, it’s a flat, toned and tight tummy. And most people feel that if they can get a flat stomach, all the other areas of their body will follow. So we’re bombarded with infomercials that focus on the be all end all wonderous inovation of their latest and greatest abdominal exercise machine. If you just get that one machine, then you’re all set! Six pack abs, here we come! Yes, there was a little bit of sarcasm in that last part. After all, if it were that easy, if we just needed the latest, greatest abdominal exercise machine for great abs, we’d all have them by now. Instead, we seem to keep getting fatter. It doesn’t really make any sense, does it? Let me make a few points about ab exercise and getting a flat, lean, six-pack stomach. Diet, weight training, and cardio play the biggest role in getting a flat stomach, not ab exercises or any one abdominal exercise machine. Most ab exercise equipment is pure junk. Most people go about training their abdominal muscles in the wrong way. With that being said, let’s look at what you can do to train your abs the right way, and what type of abdominal exercise machine can help you do it better, faster, and in more comfort. Let’s address point one above. Many ab machine advertisers, especially on infomercials, will lead you to believe that working on their adbominal exercise equipment will lead to weight loss and fat reduction, especially in the region of the abs, ie, getting rid of the bulging belly. This is incorrect on multiple points. First, working your abs, especially on those ‘6 minutes to great abs’ routines, burns very few calories. Second, you can’t spot reduce, which is the outdated idea that you will lose fat directly from the area that you exercise. In fact, your fat goes on based on your genetics, and this is also the way it comes off, and usually in the reverse order. And the abs is usually the last place fat loss occurs. You’ll see it on your hands, face, neck, etc. first, before your stomach. A quality abdominal exercise machine will strengthen your abdominal muscles, which will lead to a leaner, more toned stomach. But understand this - you won’t see that leaner toned stomach, until you remove the fat that is covering up your abs! Have you seen a relatively flat stomach on someone but it’s not firm or toned? This is most likely because they don’t work their ab muscles, so their abs aren’t developed enough to give a tigher, leaner look to the stomach. So it’s very important to work your abs. But keep in mind the points being made here, that you need an overall fat loss, exercise, and nutrition program to lose the fat covering your abs so people can see the tight sexy stomach you’ve developed on your abdominal exercise machine. A great thing about a good ab machine is that it will keep you working your abs. Let’s face it, ab training is boring and doing conventional ab exercises like floor crunches, sit ups, leg raises and reverse lying crunches can be very uncomfortable, if not downright painful, and a lot of people develop neck problems. An abdominal exercise machine plays an important role in avoiding these issues. If you keep this in mind, you’ll know what to expect from ab exercise and abdominal machines. This way, you’ll keep using it as part of an overall muscle building, fat loss program, instead of letting the machine gather dust because you didn’t lose your stomach fat from working your abs six minutes a day. Cherry Cheesecake

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

By Elizabeth Morgan Looking for the perfect dessert to bring for Thanksgiving dinner or a deliciously sweet treat to impress an important date? Then a cherry cheesecake is your answer. This simple yet intricately flavorful cheesecake is great for both a big family lunch fest and a romantic dinner, especially with a light sparkling wine. And no, forget about buying the cherry cheesecake. Why dont you make one instead? With the right tools and this simple how-to, youll be able to put together a scrumptious cherry cheesecake in no time. For the crust, you will need a cup of graham cracker crumbs, sugar (about three to four tablespoons is enough), and some melted butter. To make the cheesecake, you will need softened cream cheese and about three to four medium-sized eggs (both the eggs and the cream cheese should be at room temperature). You will also need about fifteen ounces of chilled, cherry pie-filling, sugar, and vanilla extract. Now that you have all the ingredients on hand, you can start by making the crust. Mix together the graham cracker crumbs, the melted butter and the sugar, and then force the mixture down into the bottom of a spring-form pan. Pop this in the oven and bake it at about 350 degrees for ten to twelve minutes. While baking, go right on to making the cake. Its a good idea to use an electric mixer to blend together the cream cheese, the eggs (remember to drop them in one by one), and then the vanilla and sugar. Once you get a firm consistency, bake it at about 450 degrees for ten minutes. Then, adjust the temperature to about 25 degrees lower and go on baking for another forty minutes. You can then carefully take the cake off the pan and let the cake cool. Pop it in the refrigerator overnight (or for at least nine to twelve hours). Finally, generously spread the cherry filling over the cake. Cheesecake provides detailed information on Cheesecake, Cheesecake Recipes, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Cherry Cheesecake and more. Halloween Dangers - Keeping Your Pet Safe

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Carol Stack Halloween is around the corner. While you and your kids are enjoying the fun of trick-or-treating and Halloween parties keep in mind that it can be a dangerous time for your pets. One danger is that your pet will get into the candy bowl. Chocolate in any form is dangerous for dogs and cats. As if the candy wasn’t dangerous enough, there’s also the concern that your beloved pet will swallow the candy wrapper. The wrapper, if it makes it down to the stomach, can cause blockage in the intestines, leading to either very expensive surgery or death. If you suspect your pet has swallowed any dangerous substance call your vet immediately. The death of a pet is always a terrible thing to experience, but it’s even worse if it could have been prevented. What about pumpkins and decorative corn? Are these harmful to pets? These items are relatively nontoxic but could produce stomach upset if swallowed. If large pieces are swallowed then the intestines could become blocked. Electrical wires from decorations such as electric lights or glowing pumpkins can also be a hazard for your pet. Be sure to keep them out of your pet’s reach so they don’t receive a life-threatening shock. All decorations need to be kept out of your pet’s reach. If your dog or cat chews a glass or plastic decoration they could damage their mouth. If it is swallowed, it can do terrible damage to the stomach and intestines. A carved pumpkin is fairly harmless, but if you add a candle it suddenly becomes a hazard. A cat or dog could easily knock it over, causing a fire that could take the life of family members and pets. Curious kittens are especially at risk for getting burned or singed from candle flames. Another Halloween favorite is dressing up in costumes. Children and even adults have a lot of fun pretending to be someone or something else. This has carried over to pets, too, and some dogs and cats truly do enjoy dressing up. If your pets are among those that enjoy it just make sure the Halloween costume does not constrict their movement or their ability to see or breath. Dogs in costume should also be free to bark. Be sure there are no dangling pieces that your pet could easily chew off and choke on. For those pets that do not enjoy it, dressing up in a costume can cause unnecessary stress. So follow your pet’s lead regarding this part of Halloween fun. During the time children are coming around to your home ringing the doorbell and shouting “trick or treat” be sure to keep your dogs and cats in a separate room. The extra traffic can frighten them and cause stress for your dog or cat. If your pets are with you as you answer the door, be sure they do not rush outside. That is another good reason to keep them safely locked up in another room. That leads into the last two warnings about the Halloween season. Be sure to keep your cats locked inside, even if they are used to being outside. Too many cats have been the victims of pranks around Halloween. Sadly, many do not survive the pranks. Lastly, make sure that your pet has an ID tag just in case they do sneak outside as you open the door to trick-or-treaters. An ID tag is something your pet should have on at all times so if they somehow get lost you will have a much better chance of having them returned to you. Following these tips will help your pet have a happy and safe Halloween. Carol Stack enjoys writing articles about dogs. She lives with her husband, children, four dogs and seven cats in the United States. Carol and her daughter Christy have created a site especially for dog lovers at www.christysdogportal.com that includes tips on dog training, selecting a dog, and caring for your dog.
